In this recent episode of the KoPoint Minecraft Project’s Crafting podcasts, your crafting hosts Dan and Doc discuss building projects. We begin by picking up last week’s topic of surviving with some ideas on building houses.

We discuss beginning “house theory”, which is simply an inhabitable cube, to the improvement of the materials used to construct the houses, to the expansion of houses from one room to several rooms. At the end, we briefly touch on the fundamentals of architectural and landscape design.
The thinking behind simple housing construction is the move from interacting with the game as such, into something which is like recreating the world within the game. For example: a person may realize that a shed is all they need to store stuff in and to provide a small degree of safety from the outside world, and if this is all a player wants to do with Minecraft, the game will get bring real fast. But if a player decides to use the game as a model of the real world, which is, in our opinion, where one of the real values of the game is, building a house is likely one of the first things a person will want to build.

- A good foundation is essential for a good house
- Centuries from now, when Minecraft archaeologists uncover this server, they will only find this “series of small walls”
- A each level consists of a floor, a 3 block high wall and a ceiling. For higher floors, repeat.
- Indoor plumbing with switches is a nice addition to any house, but only recently common in American homes.
- Make sure there is nothing inflammable around a block of burning netherrack.
- Most houses have separate dining areas. This is one of the more open designs.
- Use Chests and signs for cabinets. In a Minecraft house, aesthetics are usually more important than function.
- Repeat the theoretical design of the first floor, and add a roof. Voila!
- For roofing shingles and eaves, use steps. That creates a nice sloping gable.
- When roofing materials meet, creativity is the key. Make sure it looks somewhat normal.
- At this joint, the interior angle is “flipped” . This image contains both.
- The inside of the roofing materials will eventually create an “attic” if you like, though it will require a little work to look nice.
- When all is said and done, you have a nice house, like this one with a picture window facing west, toward the sunset.
